UMAP Remains Responsive to Client Experience, Expands Tech and Individual Offerings

News, UCLL, UMAP

In response to client feedback and in keeping our program tuned to client needs and wants, the U-M Aphasia Program (UMAP) is now offering additional individual therapy and increased access to teletherapy for people with aphasia. As part of the change to the program, UMAP is not offering music therapy at this time.

This means that full-time UMAP clients now have access to 25 hours of speech-language individual and group therapy per week, a slight increase over 24 hours previously offered. While our music therapy has been a valuable, therapeutic tool, our clients and potential clients have expressed a growing interest in one-on-one sessions during their time at UMAP.

UMAP clinicians are also focusing on finding new ways to integrate technology into therapy sessions, including using it to help increase access to therapy after clients return home.

For example, UMAP is excited to announce expanded teletherapy options to include several new states. Wecan  only offer teletherapy to clients when we are licensed to practice in their state, so our clinicians have been seeking additional licensing as needed and requested by current clients. Three new states — Iowa, Alabama, and Virginia — have recently been added to the growing list that includes Michigan, California, Georgia, Wisconsin, and Florida. To keep up with demand, UMAP only provides teletherapy to clients who have attended at least one intensive session in-person.

We are grateful for the continuing opportunity to serve our client needs in the best way possible, and for their honest and helpful feedback on the UMAP experience.
