The University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) at the Mary A. Rackham Institute (MARI) is participating in an ongoing research study focused on improving recovery and quality of life for individuals with post-stroke aphasia.

In collaboration with Syracuse University, University of Michigan researchers are contributing to a study investigating how non-invasive brain stimulation can help reduce post-stroke fatigue while enhancing language and cognitive recovery. UMAP is proud to serve as a local host location for this innovative project, offering in-person study sessions in Ann Arbor.

About the Study

Post-stroke fatigue and communication difficulties can significantly impact daily life and the recovery journey. This ongoing study explores the use of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)—a safe, non-invasive type of electrical brain stimulation—combined with speech-language treatment to evaluate its impact on fatigue, language, and thinking skills.

What’s Involved?

The study combines virtual sessions and in-person visits (at either the Syracuse, NY or Ann Arbor, MI location):

  • Initial Screening & Testing: Up to 5 hours of Zoom meetings to discuss the study, determine eligibility, and learn about the treatment.
  • Treatment & Testing Sessions: Eligible participants complete up to 30 hours of in-person language testing and speech-language therapy paired with tDCS brain stimulation.
  • Scheduling & Compensation: Flexible scheduling is available to accommodate individual needs. Eligible participants receive a gift card valued up to $200 for their time.

Who Can Participate?

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Have had a stroke
  • Experience speech, language, or cognitive difficulties following the stroke
