Stay in Touch with the U-M Aphasia Program
What is Aphasia? How is it Treated?
Aphasia is a communication disorder that is caused by trauma to specific parts of the brain. Stroke is the most common cause. Aphasia can affect speech, comprehension, reading and/or writing. Studies have shown intensive therapy to be the best approach to aphasia recovery at any stage. Intensive, individualized speech-language therapy is what we do at the U-M Aphasia Program — and have for more than 85 years.
