Erin Hunter Advice for Parents Back to School

UCCF in the News: How to Help Kids Manage Back-to-School Stress

General, Media Coverage, News, UCCF

Erin Hunter, Ph.D., director of the University Center for the Child and Family (UCCF) was tapped for expert advice on how to help kids manage the transition back to school this fall. Channel 7 News asked Dr. Hunter what parents can do to help make the transition from home schooling  and hybrid situations to the classroom, amidst uncertainty and the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s especially challenging when situations are contentious, with mask mandates for schools under fire and heated discussions about pandemic protocol raging on.

“I think just being mindful of how we’re talking about it and using respectful language. We don’t need to agree with everyone,” said Dr. Hunter, speaking with WXYZ’s reporter Jenn Schanz.

Dr. Hunter said it’s important to talk about these topics at home and to address what is happening, as kids — likely even young ones — understand the world is different. Dr. Hunter advised that you parents don’t have to hide how they feel, but to see that as an opportunity to set an example when expressing whatever the emotion may be.
