Does your child struggle with social or emotional delays? Are you looking for strategies to increase their social communication skills and decrease problematic behaviors? Has your child been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or do you suspect they may have ASD? Are you looking to connect with other parents in similar situations?
The University Center for the Child and Family is offering new virtual sessions for our Growing Together: Parenting a Child (5 and Under) with a Developmental Delay group (formerly called the ESDM Parent Training Group).
The virtual parenting training group will meet weekly on Fridays from 12 – 1 p.m. via Zoom, with a planned start date of April 18th.
In our virtual group, parents/caregivers will learn strategies they can implement in daily play and/or daily caregiving routines with their children that focus on increasing social communication skills and decreasing problematic behaviors. The group also includes discussions of self-care, sharing resources, and offers a space for parents to come together and discuss the challenges of parenting young kids with delays.
If you are interested in enrolling in the ESDM Parent Training Group, complete this secure, online registration form or call UCCF at (734) 615-7853 for more information and to schedule your orientation/screening appointment!
Requirements
In order to enroll in the group, the caregiver must have a child ages 5 or under who has diagnosed or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental delay (e.g. speech delay, Global Developmental Delay etc).
Participating families must attend one group screening/orientation session prior to the start of the group, to ensure that they are a good fit for the group. This initial screening appointment will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

About the Group
Based on the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), the group is a naturalistic treatment that represents a fusion between behavioral treatment methods and developmental theory. Treatment goals will focus on building strong social communication skills in young children with ASD/Developmental Delays and reducing problematic behaviors. The parent training group is designed to teach parents these strategies to increase the number of intervention hours that young children receive. A secondary goal is to support parents of children with ASD/Developmental Delays and help them develop a community of parents in a similar life stage. Since it is a parent training group, children are welcome but not required to attend.
