New UCCF Group for Children with Anxiety – Winter 2022

Events, General, News, Parenting, UCCF

The University Center for the Child and Family is offering a new, in-person Group for Children Aged 7 to 10 with Anxiety. The group is scheduled for Thursdays at 4:30-6 p.m. from mid-February to mid-April, 2022. Space is limited.

The UCCF Child Anxiety Group will provide an opportunity for children aged 7 to 10 to learn about anxiety, develop coping skills, connect with other children who experience anxiety, and learn skills to tackle their anxiety and build bravery! Parents will also have the opportunity to learn more about their child’s anxiety, learn supportive parenting skills, and reduce parental accommodation that can accidentally make anxiety grow bigger.

What to Expect

Parents and kids will work together to tackle worries and fears through exposure-based therapy in order to build confidence and overcome anxiety. This group integrates cognitive behavioral therapy for childhood anxiety (CBT/Coping Cat) with parent-based intervention for child anxiety (SPACE Program).

The group will run for 9 weeks, beginning in mid-February and ending in mid-April, plus an optional 1-month follow-up booster session in May. Each session is a total of 90 minutes, with about 60 minutes spent with the children and about 30 minutes spent with the parents each week.

Group sessions will be charged a flat rate fee of $45 per session out of pocket, or we can bill some insurances (e.g., BCN).

Requirements

In order to enroll in the group, children must be between the ages of 7 and 10 with symptoms of anxiety, which may include generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, social anxiety, or a phobia. Children are not required to have a diagnosis of anxiety prior to enrolling in the group.

Participating families must attend one group screening/orientation session in December 2021 or January 2022, prior to the start of the group, to ensure that they are a good fit for the group. Children who are not a good fit for the group for any reason will be referred to more appropriate resources.

How to Register

Prospective clients should call the clinic at (734) 764-9466 to schedule a virtual screening visit and discuss group policies. The initial screening appointment will be about 45 minutes. Referring providers may fax a brief treatment summary to UCCF at 734-764-8128 and direct parents to contact us.
